Data limits

What 'unlimited' includes, the three published conditions that qualify it, what actually consumes an allowance, and how much data an ordinary household really uses.

How we are placed. thurlowvance is an independent information service for mobile customers in the United Kingdom. We are not a mobile network. We have no affiliation with, endorsement from, appointment by or connection to Three, EE, O2, Vodafone, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile or any other provider, and no commercial arrangement with any of them. We do not sell, supply, arrange or broker SIM cards, contracts, handsets or services of any kind, and we take no commission from anybody. Everything here is general information; a provider's own current terms always take precedence.
Note 01

Is unlimited really unlimited?

On the handset, at home, yes — genuinely unmetered on all four mast owners. Three published conditions bend it, and each is readable before you sign.

ConditionWhat it does in practice
Tethering capLimits sharing data with a laptop on some plan generations
Traffic managementQueues extreme outliers at saturated masts; normal heavy use never notices
Fair use abroadEnds the unlimited part at a published figure, then charges per gigabyte

The tethering clause is the one that catches people, because it is the one that matters if you work away from a desk. Read it on your exact tier rather than on the marketing page.

Note 02

What actually uses your data

ActivityHow hungry it is
Video at high qualityBy far the biggest consumer on most accounts
Cloud photo and file backupLarge, invisible, and easily moved to home Wi-Fi
App and system updatesHeavy in bursts; restrict them to Wi-Fi
Social feeds with autoplay videoSubstantial, and autoplay can be switched off
Messaging, email, maps, musicComparatively tiny
Note 03

How much you actually need

Far less than most people buy. Rather than guessing — or letting somebody in a shop guess for you — open your app and read three months of recorded usage. That captures holidays, unusual weeks and everything else.

Buy that measured figure with a little headroom, and handle any unusual month with a one-off add-on rather than a permanent tier increase.

Note 04

Five free changes

  1. Drop video quality one step inside the streaming app.
  2. Restrict backups, photo sync and updates to home Wi-Fi.
  3. Turn off autoplay video in social apps.
  4. Download anything you will watch more than once.
  5. Check which apps use most data in your phone's settings — the answer is usually a surprise.
